A controllable valve (10), preferably an electromagnetically controlled valve, has two valve stages of which the first (14, 18) is actuated and the second (16, 20) works automatically. The open cross-section of the first valve stage (14, 18) is small and the open cross-section of the second valve stage (16, 20) is large. The first valve stage (14, 18) keeps the second valve stage (16, 20) closed. When the first valve stage (14, 18) is opened, a spring element (32) opens the second valve stage (16, 20). This valve (10) may be advantageously actuated by a small actuating force that is exclusively available to the first valve stage (14, 18). It also has a large open cross-section and thus a small flow resistance.
