The array (row) of sensors determines the position or travel of the permanent magnets (8) or electromagnets adjacent to the sensors, with a flat magnetic panel (1) which can be caused to saturate by (2,3,4,5,6,7) arranged next to or above one another. The coil turns (2',2",3',3",4',4",5',5",6',6",7',7") lie next to one another in a flat configuration at least in one plane and the magnets can move above the coils along the panel. At least two adjacent coils form a transmitter/receiver system and an a.c. voltage or pulses are impressed on the transmitter coil and the voltage they induce in the receiver coil is measured.
