On a printed data carrier (1), which has a non-absorbent surface, microcapsules are applied with a coating material in a mixing ratio or coating thickness so part(s) of the microcapsules are accessible at the surface. Microcapsules contain aromatic substances which are released when the microcapsules are broken open. Also claimed is a method of mfr. in which microcapsules are applied in a coating to a carrier having a printed image.
