Serial, bi-directional data transmission method

The method involves using a programming device to transfer data as well as clock pulses to a usage instrument, such as a hearing aid, for the individual adjustment of application-specific data of the usage instrument. A single signal line is used for the data transmission, whereby differently formed clock pulses are put on the signal line. The digital information is recovered at the receiver side by use of clock pulse variation, and is subsequently processed with the transmitted clock. A clock pulse variation is performed by the usage device on the clock pulses send by the programming device at an occurrence of a receive signal. The information encoded in the clock pulse variation is recreated in the programming device for the return path of the data transmission between the programming device and the usage device.
