The filter comprises a container with bulk solid grains such as sand, gravel and/or active carbon granules. Water is pumped into the bag through an inlet, and leaves through an outlet for return to the pool. The container is a textile or plastic bag or a sack made of a fine-pored woven fabric. The pore size is less than that of the finest particle making up the bulk solid grain. The bag is positioned within a surrounding hard-walled container which provides the strength to hold the bag and its contents. Several bags are hydraulically linked in series, and hold different grades of bulk solid grain.
