A service station (36) for servicing printheads, particularly inkjet printheads, which includes at least one blade-shaped wiper (78) and a plurality of pressure operated sprayers (74) fed with cleaning agents. The service station is subject to translational motion in both vertical and horizontal directions by an XY motion mechanism (108). In a method of employing the service station, the sprayers spray the cleaning agent onto the printhead prior to wiping.
