Antitumour compounds have the five membered fused ring ecteinascidin structure of the formula (I) are disclosed, wherein these compounds lack a 1,4-bridging group as found in the ecteinascidins; they have a hydroxy group at the C-21 position; the other variables are as defined in the specification.
