PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of cracks by forming a low-coercive force film consisting essentially of iron and nickel on a substrate of an org. polymer by ion-plating and then forming a vertically magnetized film on the film. CONSTITUTION:The low-coercive force film to be used consists essentially of iron and nickel and manganese, molybdenum, chromium, copper, etc., can be incorporated to reduce the coercive force and increase the permeability. The low-coercive force film is formed by ion-plating and hence a uniform low- coercive force film without any cracks and having an excellent magnetic characteristic can be formed on a substrate at low temp. The vertically magnetized film has magnetic anisotropy vertical to the film surface. A uniform vertical magnetic recording medium having excellent magnetic characteristic and without generating any cracks is thus obtained.
