Disclosed is a novel aortic punch (10, 10a, 10b) having a cutter (44) on the end (42) of a hollow body member (34, 34a, 34b). The hollow body member is slidable along a non-rotating shaft (38, 38b). On the end (48) of the shaft is an anvil blade (54), and helical drive structure (70, 70b, 72, 93) is provided between the hollow body member and the shaft or another non-rotating element (80) adjacent the hollow body member. The helical drive structure comprises a flange (70, 70b) receivable in a slot (72, 93) such that when a thumb button (12, 12a, 12b) is pushed into a finger grip (16, 16a, 16b), the hollow body slides along, and rotates relative to, the shaft. This movement of the hollow body causes the cutter on the end of the hollow body to rotate relative to the anvil blade located on the end of the shaft as the cutter slides past the anvil blade. This rotation of the cutter provides that the aortic punch can be used to achieve a clean and accurate cut to the wall (56) of an aorta (58) during heart surgery.
|
