A variable-buoyancy marine riser (10) and a method for providing and adjusti ng the buoyancy for such a riser. The riser (10) is comprised of a main riser conduit (11) on which a plurality of cans (20) are affixed. A slurry of particulate, buoyant material (31), e.g. small hollow spheres (30), is pumpe d into the cans to displace the seawater therein and give buoyancy to the rise r. When it is desired to reduce the buoyancy of the riser, the spheres (30) are removed by merely opening the cans (20) and allowing the surrounding seawate r to displace the spheres from the cans (20).
