PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially simple method for purifying optically active 4,4,4-trifluoro-3-hydroxy-1-aryl-1-butanones which are precursors of optically active esters of 4,4,4-trifluoro-3-hydroxybutylic acid of an important intermediates for medicines, agrochemicals and functional materials in good efficiency to the ones having high optical purity. SOLUTION: The optically active 4,4,4-trifluoro-3-hydroxy-1-aryl-1-butanones are purified by recrystallizing the compounds to the ones having the high optical purity.
