PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition for a tread which can satisfy both wet grip performances and low heat build-up while retaining excellent characteristics such as mechanical properties and abrasion resistance inherent in an epoxidized natural rubber, and a pneumatic tire using the rubber composition. SOLUTION: The rubber composition for the tread comprises 100 pts. wt. of a rubber component containing 5-100 wt% of a modified epoxidized natural rubber obtained by reacting the epoxidized natural rubber with a Lewis acid, an amine compound, a thiol compound, an amide compound or an imidazole compound thereby to open an epoxy group, and 5-150 pts. wt. of carbon black having a nitrogen adsorption specific surface area of 70-300 m<SP>2</SP>/g.
