PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable terminal in which power consumption is suppressed by minimizing the effect of on/off state of a light illuminating the surroundings and setting the brightness of a back light in the operating section and/or the display section at an optimal level, and to provide its back light control method. SOLUTION: The portable terminal 10 comprises a control section 11, a memory section 12, an operating section 13, a display section 14, a back light 15 at the operating section 13, a photosensor 16 and a light 17. The control section 11 controls the brightness level of the back light 15 for the operating section depending on the ambient illumination level detected by the photosensor 16 under normal state. When the light 17 is lighting (on), the back light 15 for the operating section is lighted while taking account of the effect of illumination on the detection level of the photosensor 16 regardless of the detection level of the photosensor 16.
