Prodn. of piston-cylinder unit useful e.g. as shock absorber - has cylinder and base joined by friction welding or magnetically deflected arc welding

Prodn. involves: a) undetachably mounting a cylinder cover (6) on one end of the cylinder (4); b) a piston (10) with a piston ring (12) is introduced into the other open end of the cylinder (4); c) the open cylinder end is closed by welding on a cylinder base (8); d) the cylinder (4) and base (8) are uniformly heated up to a material-specific welding temp. in the region of the surfaces (31,32) which face one another and are to be welded; e) the cylinder (4) and base (8) are joined as one material unit; f) during the heating phase, the piston (10) is kept far from the welding region so that the piston ring is protected from inadmissibly high thermal loading. Cylinder (4) and base (8) are joined by friction welding with the parts rotated relative to one another and pressed together thereby generating heat between the parts to be joined. In a second design the parts are pressure welded using a magnetically deflected arc whereby heating of the surfaces to be welded is effected when they are spaced apart. Following heating to the welding temp., the parts are joined together under pressure. USE/ADVANTAGE - Assembly is mfd. rapidly, simply and economically and is typically used as a shock absorber.
