PURPOSE: To obtain a video with high quality, and to provide interchangeability with an existing system by compressing the luminance signal band of a video signal, overlap sampling the same scanning line on one picture element offset, and doubly diffusing, recording, and reproducing a recording band. CONSTITUTION: A Y/C separator 30 separates a video signal VS into a luminance signal Sy and a chrominance signal Sc, and outputs them. A sampler 32 outputs two 1/2 sub-Nyquist sampling luminance signals Y(ϕ) and Y (the inverse ofϕ) whose sample phase is shifted at 180 against the same horizontal video signal from the signal Sy. First and second FM modulators 34 and 36 FM-modulates the signals Y(ϕ) and the Y (the inverse ofϕ). A low pass converter 38 outputs a low pass conversion color signal. Recording amplifiers 46 and 48 amplifies the outputs of mixers 42 and 44, and supply them to first and second sub-track recording heads 50 and 52. The video signals supplied to the heads 50 and 52 are recorded in first and second sub-tracks. The recorded video signals are read and reproduced through reproducing heads.
