PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system for detecting intermodulation distortion where each component of intermodulation distortion interference introduced by a narrow band signal within a broad band spectrum is identified. SOLUTION: A front end of a code division multiple access CDMA cellular or broad band personal communication services PCS mobile telephone receiver is provided with a changeover bypass connection to bypass a low noise amplifier 305 to give a reception signal through an amplifier bypass connection. The amplifier bypass connection includes an attenuator 306. The changeover bypass is activated by a control signal generated by a digital signal processor 330. The digital signal processor 330 analyzes the reception signal to detect and decide relative contribution of intermodulation distortion IMD interference with respect to a total reception signal output and provides an output of a control signal to bypass the low noise amplifier when the intermodulation distortion IMD interference exceeds a predetermined level.
