PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve uniform brightness over the entire length of a fluorescent lamp. SOLUTION: A fluorescent lamp 23 for fixing light comprises a rodlike glass tube 28 and bases 31, 32 provided at both ends of the glass tube 28. A fluorescent layer 36 is formed at the inner circumferential surface of the glass tube 28. The fluorescent layer 36 is thinnest at an intermediate portion 28a thereof, and becomes thicker toward both ends 28b, 28c thereof. A fluorescent lamp of a straight tube type generally has characteristic of low brightness at both ends thereof. However, the fluorescent lamp 23 is provided with the thick fluorescent layers at both ends thereof, thereby enhancing the brightness at both ends thereof so as to achieve substantially uniform brightness over the entire length.
