IMAGE DISPLAY APPARATUS AND IMAGE DISPLAY METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus and an image display method with which image movement amount can be determined with a simple constitution without using a motion vector of the image, and false contours of a moving image can be suppressed on the basis of the image movement amount.

SOLUTION: An image display apparatus 100 wherein a video signal is divided into a plurality of sub-fields weighted by time width or the number of pulses for each field. The plurality of sub-fields are temporally superimposed to be displayed, thereby performing a gray-scale display. The video signal of a current field is delayed by one field to be outputted as the video signal of the previous field. The gradient of the luminance of the image is determined based on the video signals of the current and previous fields. The difference between the video signals of the current and previous fields is calculated. A motion determining circuit 107 calculates the image movement amount based on both the calculated difference and the determined gradient. An image data processing circuit 108 suppresses the false contours of a moving image on the basis of the calculated image movement amount.
