A medium processing apparatus is provided to allow a light emitting element and a light receiving element for detecting a medium to be formed on a portion of the apparatus. A medium processing apparatus includes a medium receiving/discharging unit receiving a medium into the apparatus by a rotation movement performed after grasping the medium. A medium detecting device is formed on a portion of the apparatus out of the rotation range of the medium receiving/discharging unit. A medium discharging port stacks the medium with discharging the medium into the medium receiving/discharging unit. A roller(8a) is formed at a position adjacent to the medium discharging port. A wing(8b) feeding the medium is attached to the roller. The medium detecting device is formed in a radius of rotation of the wing. The medium detecting device includes a light emitting unit(10a) and a light receiving unit(10b). A first plate member and a second plate member have a light penetrating part. Light generated from the light emitting unit is received at the light receiving unit through the light penetrating part.
