<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell having small simple constitution and capable of stably operating even if operation conditions such as a cell output (a current density), humidifying temperature of gas, or the utilization factor of supply gas are varied. <P>SOLUTION: The polymer electrolyte fuel cell is equipped with a pair of end plates for fastening a stack from both sides; a fastening means for fastening he end plates; a control device for varying the fastening force to the stack with the fastening means, and a device for controlling the fastening pressure.
