The present invention relates to a method for producing aromatic polycarbonates, comprising the step of reacting bisphenols with dithiocarbonates or the selenium analogues thereof in the presence of a catalyst. The invention also relates to the use of dithiocarbonates or the selenium analogues thereof as transesterification reagents for the production of polycarbonates.
