Determining numerical data relating to a cancerous tumor, comprising digitizing, using e.g. a high-resolution slide scanner, a sample stained immunohistochemically, to reveal markers of differentiation and proliferation of tumor cells, is new. The method comprises subjecting the digitized image of the whole of the tumor section to the following process: (a) separating the background of the tissue by comparing the intensity of at least one color component of the pixels with a threshold, so that pixels on one side of this are considered background, e.g. pixels of higher intensity, and pixels of lower intensity are considered epithelium and stroma; (b) establishing a histogram of at least one color component of the pixels and a limit of separation is defined, essentially as the minimum in the threshold; and (c) identifying pixels on one side of this threshold as epithelium and pixels on the other side, particularly those of higher intensity, as stroma.
