The invention relates to a process for producing an at least 3 mm thick insulating backing wall covering or the like from an extruded and completely foamed polystyrene foam web. The invention is distinguished in that the polystyrene foam web is provided on one side with continuous transverse grooves lying side by side. Preferably the transverse grooves are melted into the polystyrene foam web by the effect of heat.
