Image pick-up apparatus for a portable video camera has voltage controlled generator for maintaining levels of output signals of apparatus constant. The apparatus includes an optical system for controlling incident light rays, an image pick up device for converting the light rays to signal charges and a drive pulse generator for out-putting driving pulses in order to drive the image pickup device. A signal level detecting circuit is also provided. A voltage-controlled signal generating circuit is provided for maintaining the levels of the output signals of the image pick-up device at a constant level. This occurs by controlling the driving pulses outputted from the drive pulse generating circuit in accordance with the levels of the output signals of the image pick-up device.
