PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a glass compsn. ensuring optical characteristics applicable to laser or a light amplifier having a considerably wide wavelength range in which laser oscillation or light amplification action is exhibited and the median wavelength is 1.3-1.5μm important for an optical communication wavelength region and also ensuring ferromagnetic characteristics applicable to a powdery permanent magnet. SOLUTION: This glass compsn. is based on one or more kinds of compds. selected from among carbonates or oxides of Be, Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba and contains Cr<4+> , fine CrO2 particles and at least one selected from among Ti, Zr and Hf or further contains a group IIIb metallic element.
