Chin rest (1) and shoulder support (2) are provided to hold a violin in place, the two components being connected together so as to bypass the violin and transmit pressure. Preferably, the chin rest and an intermediate part (3,4) form a permanent attachment to the violin and the shoulder support can be easily detached from them. The attachment to the violin may be only at the intermediate part and comprise a saddle knob (5).
