PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which reads an image with high quality and at a high speed. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with CCD (charge coupled device) sensors (12R, 12G, 12B, 12M) for receiving image lights from an object held with a plate-like holder transparent to light to output signals corresponding to chromatic color components of the image light, and signals corresponding to achromatic color components of the image light; and a memory (238) having first memory areas (238a) for storing chromatic color image data based on the signals corresponding to the chromatic color components outputted from the CCD sensors (12R, 12G, 12B), and second memory areas (238b) for storing achromatic color image data based on the signals corresponding to the achromatic color components outputted from the CCD sensor (12M).
