The cartridge (1) generates hydrogen from lengthwise parallel cords (4) of a material such as a borohydride integrated in a holder (5) of an inert material connected to an igniter (3). The cords can be rectangular or circular in section, depending on the shape of the holder. In a variant of the design the cords can be made in an elongated U-shape, with ends furthest from the igniter joined together. Each cord contains sufficient hydrogen for a full recharge of a fuel cell, and the cords are ignited automatically when the tension measured at the terminals of the fuel accumulator drops below a set level.
