A seal assembly 1 comprises an annular seal 3, transmitter, and receiver; the seal 3 comprises a conductor (8, Fig. 2), e.g. rubber or polymer, the opposite ends of which are connected to each other via a dielectric (11, Fig. 2) so as to form a ring-shaped circuit (12, Fig. 3), e.g. an RLC circuit; wherein the transmitter wirelessly powers the circuit and the receiver receives a response of the driven circuit. The dielectric (11, Fig. 2) may have temperature-dependent properties whereby the seal 3 temperature may be determined. The transmitter and receiver may be combined as transceiver 13. The transceiver 13 may be ring-shaped with inner diameter D1 larger than that D2 of the seal. Also a method of use is claimed. The circuit 12 may be driven over a frequency range whereby the circuit absorption spectrum (Fig. 5) is determined. A warning signal may be provided if the change in the energy absorbed exceeds a threshold. |
