The instrument consists of an elongated hollow tubular body (10) with an open end (14a) and a handle, and a fragmentation assembly (16) comprising at least two blades (18) with sharpened tips (22). The blades are controlled from the handle end of the instrument and can be moved between a retracted position in which the blade tips are parallel to one another, and an active position in which they are deployed and their tips spread apart. The blade assembly can also be equipped with a central spur which projects between the tips of the blades when retracted. The tubular body has two sections at 120-160 degrees to one another, one (12) forming the handle and the other (14) a guide sleeve for the fragmentation assembly. The outer diameter of the body is of the order of 2.5 mm. The blades are made from metal and are elastic and curved and are kept parallel to one another by the tube when retracted. ADVANTAGE - More convenient extraction of optical lens, requiring only a small incision.
