An intervertebral implant (30) has an elongated body that is narrower on each end than in the middle thereof. The body includes interconnected, parallel walls (32a, 32b) that include barbs (34) positioned along the outer edges thereof. The barbs (34) are typically inclined rearwards thereby allowing easy insertion, yet preventing retropulsion or migration of the implant (30) from the vertebral interspace. An intervertebral implant instrumentation kit includes the intervertebral implant (30), a distraction tool (10) which includes a distal end (12) having a cross section that has two diagonally opposed rounded corners (16a, 16b), and two diagonally opposed square corners (18a, 18b).
