Crystalline forms of adefovir dipivoxil and methods to prepare the crystals are described. The compositions and methods that have desirable properties for large scale synthesis of crystalline adefovir dipivoxil or for its formulation into therapeutic dosages are also described. The compositions include an anhydrous crystal form of adefovir dipivoxil in the manufacture of a medicament to treat a viral condition.
