An apparatus and a method for transmitting/receiving messages in a mobile communication terminal are provided to enable a receiver to previously register the format of a message which he/she wants to receive and receive the message by converting/transmitting the message in the format when a sender transmits the message. An apparatus for transmitting/receiving messages in a mobile communication terminal comprises the followings: a receiving terminal(12) which checks a receivable message format, transmits information about format of the checked receivable message to a server(30), and receives a message of the preset format; a transmitting terminal(10) which requests information about the message format which the receiving terminal can receive from a server and converts the format of the message into at least one of message format information acquired from the server; and the server which performs a function of transmitting the message of the transmitting terminal to the receiving terminal.
