<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve delay reduction of digital triacs and increase of cable length. <P>SOLUTION: In a system for digital transmission of image signals in a bidirectional manner, the system includes synchronizing means and a line memory on both transmitting and receiving sides, and image display means on the main transmitting side. Phase is advanced in four horizontal synchronizing cycles on the main transmitting side and a main image signal is subjected to pixel differential encoding in two horizontal synchronizing cycles and variable length encoding in a horizontal synchronizing cycle to be transmitted. The signal, is received and decoded, to correct phase difference, and after that the main image signal is outputted. Total delay in the variable length encoding and decoding of the main image signal is made less than the total of the sub image signal transmitting period of a horizontal synchronizing period, a horizontal blanking period and two horizontal synchronizing periods. A decoded sub image signal is outputted with a delay of five horizontal scanning periods with respect to the main image signal on the main transmitting side. The main image signal on the main transmitting side is also delayed by five horizontal scanning periods so as to be outputted as a confirmation image signal on the main transmitting side.
