The invention relates to an internal combustion engine of the Diesel type, that comprises at least one cylinder with a combustion chamber and a fuel injector, and is provided with a closed-loop adjustment device of the average indicated torque (CMI) or average indicated pressure (PMI), and capable of establishing a set point value of injected fuel amount. The adjustment device includes a limitation means (21) for comparing the fuel/air ratio in the combustion chamber to a threshold value (25) and for limiting, when said threshold is exceeded, the value of a variable selected from the injected fuel amount set point, the average indicated pressure (PMI) set point and the average indicated torque (CMI) set point.
