<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inverter that protects from an overload and detects wire disconnection when lamps or the like are short-circuited, without providing windings for detecting a lamp state on a transformer that secures insulating property between a load and a power supply. <P>SOLUTION: This inverter comprises a first capacitor 4 and a second capacitor 5 connected in series to the output of a DC converting circuit 3 that converts commercial AC power into DC; a first switching element 6 and a second switching element 7 connected in series to the output of the DC converting circuit 3; a transformer 8 that is connected between the first switching element 6 and the second switching element 7 and also between the first capacitor 4 and the second capacitor 5; and a drive circuit 10 that gives an alternating current to the transformer 8.
