There is provided an image processing apparatus including: a detecting unit detecting one of an entire person and a part of a person in an image produced by image data acquired by image pickup by an imaging unit; a position/size calculating unit calculating a size and a position of the detected one of the entire person and the part of the person in the image; and a GUI disposing unit disposing graphical user interface (GUI) elements, which are to be displayed by being superimposed on the image produced by the image data, on the image based on the calculated size and position.

circuitry configured to
detect one of an entire person and a part of a person in an image produced from image data acquired by image pickup by an imaging device,extract a region that is a part of the produced image and includes the detected one of the entire person and the part of the person when the region is smaller than a screen that displays the produced image,enlarge the extracted region in accordance with a size of the screen,move the extracted region toward a center position of the screen, anddispose at least one graphical user interface (GUI) element on the produced image in a range reachable by a hand of the person in the image, without disposing any GUI elements before the extracted region is moved toward the center position of the screen.
