Systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable media can send at least one request for streaming a content item. Data associated with at least one portion of the content item is streamed. A first rate at which the content item is encoded is determined. A second rate at which the content item is being streamed is determined. A need for adjusting the streaming of the content item is determined based at least in part on the first rate and the second rate. Streaming of the content item is adjusted. The adjustment causes the second rate at which the content item is being streamed to conform to the first rate.

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:
sending, by a computing device and to a content system, at least one request for streaming a content item; streaming, by the computing device and from the content system, data associated with at least one portion of the content item; determining, by the computing device, a first rate at which the content item is encoded; determining, by the computing device, a second rate at which the content item is being streamed from the content system and to the computing device; determining, by the computing device, that an adjustment to the streaming of the content item is needed based at least in part on the first rate and the second rate; and adjusting, by the computing device, the streaming of the content item, wherein the adjustment causes the second rate at which the content item is being streamed to conform to the first rate.
