PURPOSE:To prepare SiC whisker of high quality with high yield easily and stably by mixing powdery starting mateials for Si and C a catalyst and a cocatalyst uniformly and allowing the materials to react at an appropriate temp. in the presence of gaseous hydrogen. CONSTITUTION:Fine powdery starting material for silicon such as SiO2 e.g. siliceous stone, SiO2-contg. glass body, Si3N4, metallic Si, etc., starting material for carbon such as carbon black, powdery active carbon or partly gaseous hydrocarbon, etc. a catalyst such as fine powdery metallic Fe, Ni, Co, or their oxide, a cocatalyst such as chloride or fluoride of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, are mixed uniformly and allowed to react at lowest 1,300, pref. 1,350-1,600, more pref. 1,400-1,550, most pref. 1,450-1,500 deg.C in the presence of gaseous H2 for ca.30min-4hr. By this method, SiC whisker is obtd. with 85-98% yield based on the amt. of the starting material Si. |
