Precipitation-hardenable alloys, especially ones containing particulate reinforcing material, are plastic-formed (e.g. forged), by repetition of: (i) solution heat treatment; (ii) quenching; and (iii) plastic-forming to an extent insufficient to cause fracture. Alternatively, a workpiece is pretreated by heating it to a predetermined temperature and maintaining it at that temperature for a predetermined time, then quenching it to a second temperature. It can then be plastic-formed.
|
