Multi-mode image manifestation apparatus including a real image generator (15) (e.g. an LED array) that provides a real image. An optical system (12) is positioned adjacent the real image generator (15) so as to receive the real image and provide magnified image forming light at an optical output (42). A multi-mode LDC screen (50), defining a plurality of pixels and switchable between a first mode in which the screen forms a direct image from ambient light reflected by the pixels, a second mode in which the screen diffuses light impinging thereon from the image generator (15) to provide a direct view image at a surface thereof and a third mode in which the screen transmits the light from the image generator (15) therethrough to provide a greatly enlarged virtual image. <IMAGE>
