Stator coil winding method and apparatus

The partial removal of slack in a lead wire (54) of a stator coil (42,44) wound on a stator (40) is accomplished by the movement of a clamp (68) holding the free end of the lead wire (54), thereby to reduce the distance by which a pliers-like robot end effector (262) must move away from a stator (40) to place the lead wire (54) in a wire receiving terminal (52), and thus to improve the control over the handling of the lead wire (54) by the end effector (262).
