The mechanical supercharger 20 is driven via a planetary differential gear 10, with the engine 1 driving the plant carrier 13, the supercharger 20 being driven from the sun gear 11 and an external input, eg a variable hydraulic motor 30, controlling the speed of the ring gear 14. According to the invention, the ring gear 14 is rotated so that (a) the speed of the rotational speed of the supercharger increases as engine speed increases from a first to a second predetermined value of engine speed, with the rate of increase of supercharger speed being greater than the rate of increase of engine speed, and (b) the rotational speed of the supercharger remains constant as engine speed increases above the second predetermined value of engine speed. The speed-up ratio of the supercharger may be varied according to operation of the accelerator. The ring gear 14 may be allowed to rotate idly to stop rotation of the supercharger when the engine speed is below the first predetermined value. |
