A self-pumping hydropneumatic suspension strut with internal levelling for motor vehicles, has a working cylinder (1) containing damping medium and pressurised by at least one gas volume (6a) acting as a spring. The cylinder (1) is divided by a valved working piston (18) carried on a hollow piston rod (2) into an upper working chamber (3) connected to a high pressure chamber (6) in which the gas volume is provided, and a lower working chamber (4) connected to a low pressure chamber (5). A piston pump comprises a pump space (7) formed in the hollow piston rod (2) and a pump rod (8) connected to the cylinder (1). The piston pump is driven by suspension movements to pump medium from the low pressure chamber (5) into the working chamber (3) connected to the high pressure chamber (6). The damping medium in the pump space (7) is pressurised for example by a driving element (9), to enable the length of the strut to be altered in response to loading of the vehicle when stationary, without needing an external fluid supply.
