A unified messaging system (100) includes a server node (10) with a telephony interface (126) to interface with the public switched network (160) and a web interface (28) providing an interface to a wide area network (150) and enables the receiving of a plurality of types of messages via these interfaces. The messages are stored in a database (110) and provided by the server node (10) to a user node (20) executing a web browser (26). The server node (10) provides message conversion so that a user at the user node (20) can retrieve messages of different media types, respond to those messages, forward messages, and send messages of different types across a plurality of media originating from the user node (20) over the wide area network (150).
