PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save energy by software processing while eliminating cost increase incident to hardware processing. SOLUTION: The recorder comprises a motor 8 for driving a carriage 6 mounting a print head 7, a position sensor 14 for determining the reference position of the carriage 6, and a control circuit 15 for controlling the drive motor 8 to perform printing on a print sheet 13 by reciprocating the carriage 6 in the main scanning direction in response to a print command and also controlling the print head 7 wherein the position sensor comprises a photointerrupter including a light emitting element and a light receiving element. An energy save mode decision means for bringing the recorder into energy save mode when a recording command is not inputted to the control circuit for a predetermined time controls the carriage to be located at the light intercepting position of the photointerrupter during energy save mode.
