Alginate, in which carboxylic acid functional groups are partially esterified or etherified with an alkyl and/or aryl residue, is new. Independent claims are included for: (1) the preparation of (I); (2) a cosmetic composition comprising one or more alginate; and (3) a preparation of cosmetic composition with viscosity of 500-100000 mPas comprising mixing the alginate and the electrolyte.
