A main rope for hanging an elevator car is held between a first rope holding body including a first roller and a second rope holding body including a second roller. The first roller and the second roller are each rotated as the main rope moves. Further, at least either the first roller or the second roller is a braking roller. A brake device has a rotating body rotated integrally with the braking roller, a braking body displaceable between a contact position at which the braking body is in contact with the rotating body and a separated position at which the braking body is separated from the rotating body, and a braking body displacement device for displacing the braking body. The braking device is adapted to brake rotation of the rotating body and the braking roller by causing the braking body to be in contact with the rotating body. The movement of the main rope is braked by braking rotation of the braking roller.
