PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an element substrate capable of checking an electrical connection state prior to a failure of a printing head. SOLUTION: The element substrate which can be attached to and detached from a printing apparatus comprises a plurality of printing elements, a logic circuit for controlling the printing elements, a voltage applying terminal for applying driving voltage in order to drive the printing elements and a connection-state output circuit. The logic circuit is driven at a voltage lower than the driving voltage. The connection-state output circuit outputs a signal which reflects an electrical connection state between the printing head and the printing apparatus based on the driving voltage.
