PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To roughly uniformly heat a catalyst material.SOLUTION: An exhaust emission control system for an internal combustion engine includes: a casing 23 disposed in an engine exhaust passage 21; an exhaust emission control catalyst 24 disposed in the casing; and microwave irradiation mechanisms 50, 30 disposed in the engine exhaust passage. The exhaust emission control catalyst includes: a carrier base material containing a dielectric body or a magnetic body that can absorb microwaves; and a catalyst material disposed on the carrier base material to purify exhaust gas. The microwaves emitted by the microwave irradiation mechanisms are absorbed into the dielectric body or the magnetic body, so as to heat the exhaust emission control catalyst. The microwave irradiation mechanisms irradiate the exhaust emission control catalyst with microwaves having predetermined frequency, measure the intensity of reflection waves of the microwaves, detect a position in the longitudinal direction of liquid water in the casing on the basis of the intensity of the reflection waves of the microwaves, irradiate inside of the casing with microwaves so that the intensity of the microwaves at the position of the liquid water becomes relatively high, and heat the liquid water by using the microwaves so as to evaporate and remove the liquid water.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 |
